I've now had 2 excellent dinners of sushi and ramen
at this relatively new restaurant.
On Girard, south of Pearl in a non-crowded part of LJ. Street parking typically available.
Friendly service in a family restaurant.
Excellent sushi selection and quality.
Ramen is very good.
Beer, wine, and sake available.
Prices are reasonable.
Minimalist decor. Noise level is low.
Enjoyable experience and highly recommended by THE doctor ( Notorious MD). -

Walked in and the owner runs out of the kitchen waving her hands and yelling "No, no, no!" Told the host something in a different language and he told us that he is sorry they can't seat a table for 5. Not sure if it was my 3 kids that scared her off, maybe we were dressed too casual, could have been my stroller. The place had just opened for dinner and there was one person waiting for an order 2 go and 2 tables of people who were with us but sitting separately, plenty of empty tables for us to sit at.
I understand if you are fully booked and waiting for the parties to show up, or the president of the United States was coming. Just tell me that, instead she came out screaming. I don't care how good your food is, if you show no respect or service to your customers I'm out.
The one star is for the host who calmly and apologetically translated what she was saying. If you go there after this review I hope you get better service. -

This new sushi spot is a little off the main path in the village of La Jolla. It is on Girard Ave south of Pearl St, whereas most businesses are farther north in the area. A benefit of their location is that nearby curbside parking is a little easier to find. You could even park in the plaza lot where VONS is located and walk a block over.
The inside of the restaurant was clean and modern with the sushi bar near the kitchen in the back. I sat at a booth and looked at their menu sheets which had no pictures (a pet peeve of mine) and only descriptions. There was a lengthy list of maki rolls, regular and specialty, that dominated an entire page. I decided to order some madai nigiri (2 pcs) to start my meal. It was reasonably sized and fresh for $6.
I followed up by selecting three different rolls... Energy, Firecracker, and Pink. The first was a combination of yellow tail, eel, gobo, avocado, cucumber, sprouts, and masago. The second consisted of spicy tuna with scallions on top and spicy scallops. The third was made up of salmon on top, spicy salmon, soy paper and dynamite sauce. Perhaps because it had the mildest flavoring of the bunch, I did like the Pink roll the best.
The prices for the sushi looked reasonable, but I did notice the cost for ramen was on the high side even though I never saw the bowl size for the noodles. The service was provided by two waitresses who were pleasant and polite. It's unfortunate that another reviewer had issues with the temperament of a staff member. I certainly did not encounter that during my dinner experience which I gave between 3.5 and 4 stars. -

Our server was friendly and helpful, the food was fresh and well presented. We had a nice meal and I thought it was reasonably priced. We will be back!

I came for the ramen. I go to ramen after ramen after ramen restaurants almost everyday. Unfortunately the ramen was not my favorite. I've come to realize ramen shouldn't be clear...at least not the ramen I've been eating. Also, I asked for the ramen with black garlic oil and I could see there may have been some around the edges of my bowl, but that's it. I always get extra. The broth was just ok. I've always gotten pork broth but they had chicken broth. I wouldn't go back for that ramen.
The pork was so tough I couldn't cut it and didn't have one bite of it. It looked tough and it was.
Had the salmon sashimi and it was delish.
Service was good, too, but the ramen wasn't.
